Fitzpatrick Skin Types 1-5 Explained below:

Type 1 (0-6 points)

You always burn and never tan in the sun. You are extremely susceptible to skin damage. You should stay away from the sun as much as possible and use sunscreen and eye protection as much as possible. If you have this skin type you would notice that you only get more freckles and your skin would further redden. However there are other options to consider like sunless tanning equipment.

Type 2 ( 7-11 points)

You almost always burn and rarely tan in the sun. You are highly susceptible to skin damage. Generally follow The Skin Cancer Foundation's prevention tips but also consider using a sunscreen with a SPF of 30+ and clothing with a UPF rating of 30 or higher. Seek the shade whenever you are out in the sun. There are mild and cosmetic sunless tanning equiptment that can get you the same results as a UV tanning session.

Type 3 (13-18 points)

You sometimes burn and sometimes tan in the sun. You are susceptible to skin damage. Be sure to apply a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15 every day, wear sun-protective eye wear and try not to be in the sun between the hours of 10am and 4pm. Your skin will eventually turn to a light brown and minimally burns.

Type 4 (19-24 points)

You tend to tan easily and are less likely to burn. But you are still at risk for skin damage so use sunscreen with an SPF of 15+ outside and seek the shade between 10 AM and 4 PM. Your skin will reach deep to dark shades of color.

Type 5 (25-30 points)

You tend to tan easily and rarely burn but still need to tan moderately and use protective eye wear to prevent UV damage. Your skin will reach deep to dark shades of color but like all skin types are still at risk for skin damage.

Type 6 (31 plus points)

You have a very dark skin type that rarely burns but you should still use sunscreen and are still susceptible to skin damage.
